Daniel Flynn works with white-on-white embroidery on silk and nylon, holding fragments of memory in a delicate, physical form. His stitched phrases - drawn from personal moments, collected language and everyday observations - are arranged like micro “plays”, small scenes that act out in the mind of the viewer. These scenes show the viewer where place and feeling are inseparable - a late night car freeway ride, 1970’s California , an early morning sunrise - moments that shape us, and in turn, hold something of us long after we’ve forgotten.
The subtle stitches exist like condensation on glass. Specific, but ambient. Changing as it’s observed and as time passes by, as if looking into a place half remembered. In part, Flynn stitches to resist this quiet erosion of memory, making each work a way to hold onto what might otherwise fade.
